Russian Museum, the first museum of the Russian art opened in 1898 has an exceptional record of the Russian experience. Its collection of over 400 000 items documents the inspirations, personality, and imagination of the Russian nation throughout eleven centuries. Revealing key aspects of Russia’s rich artistic and cultural history Russian Museum exhibits more than five thousand icons, Old Russian art and craft work, Russian folk art, Russian school classical paintings, collections of Russian avant-garde works and its leaders such as Kandinsky, Malevich and Rodchenko, numismatics collection and large collection of prints from the seventeenth century to the Soviet period.
Russian Museum today is the one of the largest museums in Russia: museum complex coverage is more than 30 hectares. The main exhibition is located in gorgeous Mikhailovsky Palace - neoclassical residence built for Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, and in the Benois Wing, former exhibition pavilion for the Russian Academy of Arts. Other buildings in the museum complex are no less important and outstanding – Stroganov Palace, Marble Palace, Mikhailovsky Castle, Peter the Great Summer Palace and Cabin of Peter the Great. Mikhailovsky Garden and Summer Garden are also part of the complex especially enjoyable during summer months. Both gardens are a close walk from the main museum building and are landscape design treasures of Saint Petersburg.
